Sensei's PageExciting news from AATC! Judith Robinson Sensei has been awarded the title of Shidoin. A
Shidoin is an officially certified instructor by Hombu Dojo World
Headquarters and the Takemusu Aikido Association. In fact Robinson
Sensei was the first Shidoin to be awarded by the TAA! There are three
levels of certification: Fukushidoin, who are nidan and higher;
Shidoin, who are godan and above; and Shihan, the highest, who are at
least 6th dan. Not everyone who is 4th or 5th dan receives the
certification of Shidoin. Sensei Judith Robinson has twenty-five years of experience in the martial arts. She is a student of Hans Goto Sensei, who was an uchideshi at Iwama, Japan, training under Morihiro Saito Shihan, 9th Dan. She has also trained with Mitsugi Saotome Shihan, Bill Witt Shihan, Frank Doran Sensei, John Stevens Sensei, and Hiroshi Ikeda Sensei. She holds a fifth degree black belt (godan) in Aikido, a first degree black belt in karate and has also studied wing chun and tai chi. She is a graduate of the Model Mugging Program with certification in both single attacker and weapons disarm. She has also been a professional body guard.Greetings from Robinson Sensei! Greetings! Over the summer, in our AikidoKids! program, and also at Yaqui, we are discussing the Eight Virtues of Budo. We have a general discussion on Monday and on Wednesday a talking circle at which each person present tells about what that virtue means to him or her. As you know, as we fold our hakamas at the end of class we are supposed to meditate on the Eight Virtues, one for each pleat. They are - Truth, Bravery, Compassion, Courtesy, Sincerity, Loyalty, Discernment and Faith. Some are obvious for samauri; bravery, loyalty are clearly battlefield virtues. But what about the others? Why are Faith and Compassion and Discernment important to warriors? Perhaps it's because the lord/daimlo/shogun/leader needed to know exactly who he could count onto fight on his side; it was literally a matter of life and death. So this code evolved, describing the characteristics of someone who lived an honorable life and could be counted on to behave in an honorable manner. And so the Eight Virtues of Budo still have meaning today, teaching us how to be people who can be counted on. People of Honor. Blessings -Sensei |
